Shullsburg is a city in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,246 at the 2000 census. The city is located within the Town of Shullsburg.

Shullsburg is located at 42°34?26?N, 90°13?54?W (42.574022, -90.231806)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,246 people, 527 households, and 336 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,123.6 people per square mile (433.4/km²). There were 576 housing units at an average density of 519.4/sq mi (200.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.52% White, 0.16% Asian, and 0.32% from two or more races.

There were 527 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,333, and the median income for a family was $41,500. Males had a median income of $27,379 versus $21,630 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,902. About 5.0% of families and 9.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over.

Notable people

Shullsburg was the boyhood home of Lou Blonger, the "Bunco King" of Denver, Colorado. Blonger lived in Shullsburg from 1853, when he was four, until 1864, when he enlisted in the Union Army as a fifer. His older brother Mike Belonger remained in Shullsburg and many of Mike's descendants still live in the area.
